Powerline networking

In the new house I'm living in the master socket and router are on the other side of the house and my landlord doesn't really want me laying a network cable down the stairs, across the hallway and through the lounge.

I'm currently using a really old shitty wireless dongle to connect my desktop and it keeps crapping out.

Has anyone had any experience using Powerline adapter kits and if so how's it been with regards to ping?

This is the kind of thing I'm looking at.

Yeah I've used several different sets mate. We've used several different types at work for home workers and have never had to go out to troubleshoot them. I used to game using my Devolo set of powerline adapters and had no latency issues at all, although obviously you won't pull the same download speeds that you would if you were straight into your router.

For gaming on they're fine though, and the sets I've used also work fine if you plug them into like a 4-way adapter or whatever if you're short on socket space. You can also add another adapter at any point and have a third connection, maybe for a laptop if your wireless is flakey or you're misfortunate enough to have a Virgin 'Super'Hub.

The functionality with extension leads is something that I was wondering about too, so that's good to know! I think I might pick up a set, latency was my biggest concern because I don't really want to be forking out £30-£40 for a set if I can't game using them.

What's the issue with superhubs?

Wireless coverage with superhubs is truly awful, other than that they're fine. The downside of course is that wireless coverage for a wireless router is somewhat important!

I have used this set for a customer of mine who's kid is addicted to WOW. and I never heard any complaining from him so I assume it works fine but they also have 500Mbs types that should really do the trick.

I used powerplugs at home for an IP Phone. that worked well for a year till I decided to unplug it and move to another socket. Now I cant get them to connect anymore.

That's weird about switching socket, did you try putting it back in the old socket to test if it was the just an issue with the new socket?

Never actually had a problem with my ssuper hubs wireless. Get brilliant signal all around my house, much better than my previous dLink Router.

no i don't use them anymore. got a wireless modem from the ISP that works through the whole house.

I had some of the wall plugs a while back and they were really good, but i think i may have torren... I mean downloaded legally bought software and music...
and one of them fried after about 12 months, but i had really cheap and nasty ones.... speed was good though..
